Andvari was a dwarf who joined Sigrid's quest for revenge in Twilight of the Gods. He was voiced by Kristofer Hivju. He was a blacksmith capable of making weapons out of god-killing iron, so Sigrid went to him when seeking such weapons.

"Andvari" is the name of a dwarf who lives under a waterfall in Norse mythology, which may be a basis for this character.

Biography[]

Fafnir becomes the crown prince

Fafnir becomes the crown prince.

Andvari lived in the dwarf kingdom and befriended a pair of princes, who would transform into their animal forms to explore and play. One of the brothers, Fafnir, secretly orchestrated the demise of the other through a deal with Loki Laufeyson, resulting in Fafnir's promotion to crown prince. Loki claimed the death was an accident and agreed to pay a sum of gold to the king. The gold was Andvari's horde, which was cursed. When Fafnir got his hands on it, he became a dragon and lost his kingdom.[1]

It's called Antler

Sigrid takes up Antler.

Andvari became a blacksmith, always hoping to one day get his revenge on Loki and Fafnir for both killing his closest friend and stealing his gold. He crafted weapons from god-killing iron and cursed them to extend his own life. Only those with pure intentions could wield them, and in so doing, would lose something of value. When they met their fate, Andvari would avoid his. Sigrid came to Andvari when she sought to kill Thor Odinson and took up the cursed spear, Antler.[2]

Andvari joined Sigrid's quest in the hopes that he'd gain access to the elusive Loki along the way. He knew from the start that she was working with him and his best chance at revenge would be to join her. Sigrid sought the Vanir to help them against the Aesir forces of Asgard, but Andvari warned her against trusting any of the gods, claiming that both Loki and the Vanir were no better than Thor. Their best bet would be to turn them all against each other, which, coincidentally, was also Loki's plan.[3]

The Worm title card

Andvari faces Fafnir.

Upon meeting the Vanir, their leader, King Tiwaz, agreed to help them only if they brought one of the apples of immortality, which happened to be guarded by Fafnir. Andvari quickly claimed Fafnir's life for his own. When they found the dragon, Andvari held his attention while the others plucked apples from the orchard, but Fafnir soon noticed their presence and a battle erupted. Sigrid's team was victorious, but Andvari decided to let his old friend live. Leif, on the other hand, decided against it.[1]

Andvari vs Loki

Andvari faces Loki.

After convincing the Vanir to help with their quest, Andvari was part of the secret group to sneak behind enemy lines to assassinate Thor. They crept through the Asgard wall and found Thor, but he was prepared and captured them. Loki arrived to distract Thor and buy time for the group to escape, but Andvari's sights were set on Loki. When he saw his chance, he sneaked up behind the conniving god with his maces drawn. Leif had made a connection with Loki by this point and hesitated to allow Andvari to take his revenge, giving Loki the opportunity to take Andvari in his hand and crush his skull.

Leif regretted defending Loki since it resulted in the death of someone who had become a friend. He buried what little he had of Andvari alone and Andvari's death drove another wedge between Leif and Sigrid on the eve of the final battle.[4]

Powers and abilities[]

Blacksmithing: A blacksmith by trade, Andvari was renowned for his god-killing weapons.

Curse magic: Rather than charging gold for his weapons, Andvari gave them powerful curses that would extend his life. When a wielder of his weapons met their fate, Andvari would avoid his. His curses were also the reason Fafnir was trapped in the body of a dragon.

Shapeshifting: Like other dwarves, Andvari was capable of shapeshifting, becoming a large pike. His pike jaws were strong enough to bite into Aesir soldiers and his skin was tough enough to swim in the molten metals of his forge.

Combat skills: Andvari was surprisingly quick on his feet for such a stout and aged person. He had acrobatic agility that he could use to quickly evade enemy attacks and was also capable of powerful blows that could smash through the bodies of gods. He could throw his maces across great distances with the power and accuracy needed to take out a foe before they could sense his presence.

Appearances[]

Norse origins[]

Andvari is based on a dwarf of the same name from Norse legends. In mythology, Andvari was a dwarf who lived under a waterfall and could transform into a pike. He owned a ring that provided riches known as Andvaranaut, or "Andvari's gem," but it was stolen by Loki. Andvari cursed the ring so that it would bring about the end for anyone who used it, but this curse never afflicted Loki, who gave the ring to the king of the dwarfs, Hreidmar, as payment for accidentally killing Hreidmar's son Ótr. Fáfnir, Hreidmar's other son, killed his father for the ring and transformed into a dragon to guard it.

Andvari doesn't live under a waterfall in Twilight of the Gods, at least as far as we've been shown, but many of these elements from mythology match what's seen of Andvari in Twilight. Andvari's horde was also stolen by Loki and given to Fafnir's father as payment for "accidentally" killing Fafnir's brother, though in this case, Fafnir and Loki secretly orchestrated the attack. Andvari cursed the gold which ultimately led to Fafnir becoming a dragon. Fafnir mentions the name of Andvari's father, Oin, which is also the name of Andvari's father as presented in the Poetic Edda.
