Jötun, more commonly known as giants, were a race of large, powerful humanoids that rivaled the gods. They made several appearances in Twilight of the Gods, even separately from the half-blood protagonist, Sigrid.
Physiology[]
Jötun were a humanoid race, but their proportions were stockier and they were far more massive than humans. There were different races among the giants, with some appearing very much like large humans, while others had traits that were not so human-like. Dahl and many of her followers had bluish skin and hair, while the giants of the Open Hand had pale, human-like skin and brown or ginger hair.
Giants often got tattoos based on their home kingdom. The Open Hand giants, for example, had long, swirling stripes that would come to an end in the shape of a hand. Female warriors wore their hair in one or more braids adorned with accessories at the ends.
History[]

The throne room of Jötunheim.
The Open Hand was a clan of giants with a kingdom in Jötunheim. They were welcoming to non-giants until some time after Sigrid left to search for the Völsung land of her mother. Led by King Glaumar, Sigrid's father, the Open Hand closed themselves off from the outside world and became embittered toward humans and gods, blaming the former for war and the latter for the failure of their crops.

Thor attacks.
When Sigrid returned to Jötunheim for her wedding, the Open Hand giants prepared a ceremony. The Open Hand, knowingly or not, sheltered Loki Laufeyson in their kingdom. Thor Odinson came for him, crashing the wedding. When they refused Thor's demands, he slaughtered everyone in the kingdom, leaving none but Sigrid and her betrothed, Leif.[1]
