Leif's father didn't approve but eventually died. His sword was used as a grave marker where Leif would visit him. As the years passed, Leif returned for his father's blessing to marry Sigrid, telling him to release his sword if he approved. He struggled to remove the sword, eventually loosing it and taking it up as a marriage gift for Sigrid.

Norse origins[]

As a member of Clan Völsung, Leif is based on the legendary clan from Norse mythology. Their namesake came from their ancestor, Völsung, who was a grandson of Odin. Völsung, as Leif hoped to do, married the daughter of a jötun.

Gorm's sword

Gorm's sword

Leif pulls his father's sword from his father's grave when he wishes to give it to Sigrid as a wedding gift and struggles with it, interacting with it as though his father, Gorm, is holding it back. Sigmund, a son of Völsung, similarly loosed a sword called Gram after Odin stuck it into a tree. It could only be pulled out by the one for whom it was meant, so the others who tried all failed. Sigmund used the sword until it was broken by Odin, and then it was later repaired for his son, Sigurð, who used it to kill Fáfnir. Gram was said to be "decked with gold and gleaming bright," like Leif's sword. While many of the story details are altered to fit the plot of Twilight of the Gods, the story of Leif's sword shares these notable similarities to that of Gram, as he similarly used it to kill Fafnir. Gram was later placed on Sigurð's funeral pyre, never to be seen again.
