Magic is a supernatural force present in the Twilight of the Gods series.

Types[]

Carving magic[]

Egill's magic

Egill carried sticks with runes carved into them, which he could use for various small tasks based on how he used them. They were typically used for minor trickery, such as misdirecting an aggressor who was searching for Egill. By scratching out the runes on one, he was able to briefly heat Inge's knife, causing her to drop it. Similarly, he could scratch out the runes to emit magical projections that could block attacks from Aesir soldiers. Scratching the carvings presumably sacrificed them, preventing future use. Driftwood was said to be the best source for this type of magic. Egill learned this magic from Odric, his former friend and lover, who kept a healing bowl using the same runes. It was unknown if the bowl's magic worked, but Odric didn't seem to be convinced.

Gateway and transportation magic[]

Thyra's magic

Thyra was capable of opening the gateway to Vanaheim. The city of the Vanir was closed off from the mortal realm and could only be entered by those deemed worthy. Thyra knew the magic to open the way, which she used to help Sigrid's group pass after they proved themselves worthy.[1]

Sigrid returns home

Land passage into Jötunheim required the use of a magical bridge that could only be revealed by the blowing of a horn. Sigrid and Leif used this to enter the kingdom of the giants.[2]

Shapeshifting[]

Shapeshifting

A common type of magic was shapeshifting. Some dwarves were naturally capable of changing their skin between their dwarf form and a select animal form, such as Andvari becoming a pike or Fafnir becoming a crane. Loki was a particularly accomplished shapeshifter, capable of transforming into many different animals including a lizard, spider, seagull, horse, and worm. His daughter Jörmungandr's natural form was a world-encircling serpent, but she, too, could take a humanoid form. Ulfr was also able to transform into a first wolf.

Wyrding magic[]

Hoenir's head

Wyrding was said to be "our deeds woven all at once." It was the white magic of fate that could be used to prophesize the future based on one's past deeds, unlike seidr magic, which was a more direct method of viewing the future. When Wyrding was gathered in large quantities, it could clump together and fall like snow.

Curses[]

Curses are magical spells of a negative nature which are cast on others with the purpose of harming them physically or psychologically.
