Sigrid and Leif's wedding was a ceremony held in Jötunheim by the Open Hand clan of jötun. It took place during the events of the first episode of Twilight of the Gods, "The Bride-Price," and was the inciting incident for the rest of the series.

History[]

Jötunheim throne room

Leif meets with Glaumar.

When Sigrid confessed to Leif that she missed her home and that she wished he could see it, he agreed to journey to Jötunheim for their wedding. Leif met Sigrid's father, King Glaumar, and offered him his father's sword, the Völsung hoard, and a gift of seeds as the bride price. Though Glaumar was hesitant to trust a human, his people needed seeds and the silver of the hoard was vast. They feasted and prepared for the wedding.

The Bride-Price title card

Thor attacks the Open Hand.

A beautiful ceremony was prepared and the pair were ready to be wed, but just before they could finish, Thor Odinson arrived to crash the wedding. He came seeking the traitor, Loki Laufeyson, who was hiding among the Open Hand giants, whether they were aware or not. Glaumar denied any knowledge of Loki's presence and offered to speak with Thor elsewhere, but Thor refused both to leave and believe. He got frustrated and struck Glaumar's shield. As a response, the giants rose to attack Thor and were killed one by one.

Baldr leaves Sigrid and Leif

Baldr finds Sigrid and Leif.

Thor's brother, Baldr, tagged along as his peacekeeper but stood by as Thor killed every man and woman of the Open Hand. Thor even followed the children back to their refuge and destroyed them without a trace left behind. Sigrid and Leif, who were attempting to save the children, were thrown back by the blast. Baldr noticed that they still lived, but hid this fact from his brother so they might survive his wrath. The pair of gods moved on.[1]

Aftermath[]

Hel's red door

Sigrid is pulled into Hel.

Loki was indeed hiding among the giants and he survived Thor's attack. After witnessing Sigrid's wrath at the slaughter of her clan, Loki and his daughter, Hel, invited her to Hel to discuss revenge. Sigrid's desire for revenge aligned with Loki's desire to kill Thor to protect his family, so they formed an alliance.
