Twilight of the Gods Wiki

The valkyries were a race of all-female, winged beings. When a battle would take place, they appeared and decided who would live and who would die, guiding the souls of the fallen warriors into Valhalla. They were a minor race in Twilight of the Gods, appearing in three episodes with no spoken lines.

Physiology[]

A valkyrie claims a body for Valhalla

The valkyries were extremely beautiful, yet fearsome female beings. All the valkyries seen shared almost identical physical traits. They stood taller than humans, their bodies were fit and graceful, with full, round breasts. Their piercing blue eyes were as cold as ice and their long hair was white like freshly fallen snow. This same brilliant white color also characterized their pubic hair, which stood out against their fair skin. A pair of large, black wings granted them the power of flight.

They each wore a helmet adorned with small wings, often alongside another piece of armor, such as a pauldron or gorget. Apart from these, the valkyries were entirely nude, displaying all their enchanting yet intimidating beauty. Some of the valkyries also carried long, elegant spears.

History[]

Valkyrie and Sigrid

Sigrid comes face-to-face with a valkyrie.

The first time Leif laid eyes upon a valkyrie was after a battle in which foreign invaders attacked Völsung land. It was here that he met Sigrid, to whom the valkyrie gave a slight bow, recognizing her as one who would again meet the valkyries on a battlefield. She and the other valkyries collected the bodies of the dead for Valhalla.[1]

Valhalla longboats

The einherjar join the battle.

The valkyries would be seen again at the war between Aesir and Vanir, where they not only collected troops to join the einherjar, but released the einherjar from Valhalla down into the battlefield. They seemed to follow Sandraudiga's command when she called out for the end of that day's fighting.[2]

The valkyrie takes Sigrid

Sigrid is taken to Valhalla

During the final battle, Hervor fell to Thor Odinson's hammer, believing she would finally get to see her sons in Valhalla, but her cursed sword barred her entry. Instead, to Sigrid's protests, Hel took her to be at peace in the nether. When Sigrid was later killed by Loki Laufeyson, a valkyrie descended to take her to Valhalla.[3]
